Cancun taxis have no meter: zone fares to each casino

The zone system is unusual among Mexican beach destinations and it explains most of what confuses visitors. There are 53 fare zones in the municipality, plus several on the mainland side of Isla Mujeres, three inside the Hotel Zone, one for the beaches and one for the airport, which is the most expensive of all. The price does not depend on the kilometres you travel or the minutes you sit in traffic. It depends on which zone you started in and which one you end in.

The trade is large and organised: the «Andrés Quintana Roo» drivers' union covers a fleet of more than 8,600 vehicles in the municipality of Benito Juárez alone. On the minimum fare within a single zone, the official reference we could find gives 34 to 37 pesos — about two dollars — while sources reporting real behaviour give 50, or 60 to 80. That gap between the official number and the street number is the subject of this whole page.

The prices that circulate, and why they disagree

Now the other half of the picture. A separate news source puts the downtown-to-Hotel-Zone run at 200 to 350 pesos under agreements between the driver cooperatives, and collects public complaints of 250 to 700 pesos for that same trip depending on the hour. So for one journey, the published figures run from 200 to 700.

That spread is not a weakness in our sources; it is the finding. A system with no meter and no public tariff table produces exactly this: a price that depends on the driver, the hour, where you flagged the car and whether you asked before or after. Any page that hands you one number for «a taxi to the casino in Cancun» is inventing precision it does not have.

The taximeter reform, in its real state

The union itself put the proposal to the state mobility institute: a gradual rollout from the first quarter of 2026, with a target of at least half the 8,600 cars by the end of the year. The scheme described is a per-kilometre charge while moving plus a per-minute charge in traffic, with permitted surcharges for night, tolls and the airport, and the running total visible to the passenger. That description comes from a single source, and the flag-drop has not officially been set. Until somebody can show a meter running, «announced» is the correct word.

What this means for a trip to a casino

We cannot give you a fare per casino, because the 53-zone table is not public. What we can give you is the geography, which is what the zones follow. Three rooms — Jubilee, Palace Bingo and Casino By Yak — are on the Avenida Tulum axis downtown, so from a downtown hotel they are a within-city trip, from 100 pesos. Two more sit on Avenida Andrés Quintana Roo to the west, 200 m (660 ft) apart, also within the city. Casino Macao is the only one on the beach strip, at kilometre 12.5, so from another Hotel Zone hotel it is a within-Hotel-Zone trip, from 300 pesos.

The expensive move is the crossing. From a Kukulcán Boulevard hotel to the downtown rooms and back you are paying the «from 450» leg at least once: at published starting prices that is 650 pesos for the round trip, roughly $39. Treat it as a floor rather than a fare — the same reporting that collects complaints of 250 to 700 pesos for a single crossing is the reason a late return can cost considerably more. The two things that are documented, not rumoured

• Prices quoted in dollars. Reporting on the reform records a specific complaint: tourists are given fares in dollars for short trips. Ask in pesos, and answer in pesos.
• The airport corridor. One account gives an official range of 100 to 400 pesos for the airport run while noting that some drivers ask up to 100 dollars. In January 2025 a public complaint about a 10,000-peso fare reached the national press. Uber and DiDi as a price check

Ride platforms are legal in Quintana Roo: the state congress legalised them in a 2023 reform of the mobility law, and a federal court in Cancun issued a ruling in Uber's favour in November 2024. Reported prices for the downtown-to-Hotel-Zone leg are 100 to 150 pesos against 250 and up in a taxi — so even if you do not use the app, opening it tells you what the trip is worth before you negotiate.

The practical limits are worth repeating, because they are one-sided. Downtown, the apps work normally and cars arrive quickly. In the Hotel Zone drivers frequently cancel pickups, especially near hotel entrances and taxi ranks. At the airport terminals they effectively do not take pickups at all. Drop-offs never fail anywhere.

One last thing worth putting on the same page as the fares. A round trip across town costs what a decent dinner costs, and at the end of it the gaming floor is physical: you load cash onto a house card at the cage, credit to players is banned by federal regulation, and there is no demo mode anywhere on a Cancun floor — no way to see how a machine pays before you commit money to it. A licensed Mexican site does have one, free and before any deposit.
