The resort myth

Which Cancun resorts have a casino? Two in the whole state, each with a catch

Two. Out of the roughly two hundred large resorts in Cancun and its corridor, two have a gaming room inside: the Red Casino at Grand Oasis, kilometre 16.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, and Casino del Mar at the Royalton Riviera Cancún, which opened in December 2025. Neither is straightforward. On the first the sources contradict each other: the hotel and Mexico's federal register say it is open, the Google listing says permanently closed. The second is not in Cancun at all but in Puerto Morelos, and it is billed separately from the all-inclusive rate. Every other resort has no gaming room. Checked 10 September 2026.

It is the most repeated question in the city, and the answer in circulation is wrong from both directions. Agencies sell "resorts with casinos" that have none; the forums answer that no hotel in Cancun has one, which has been false since December 2025. The exact version is duller and more useful: two, both with fine print, and neither works the way people picture a Las Vegas hotel-casino.

The two hotels with a gaming room inside

The first two are in Cancun and its corridor; the third is down in the Riviera Maya.

That third row is the one almost nobody counts: Casino Bahía in Akumal is the only gaming room in the Riviera Maya, and it too sits inside a resort, a hundred kilometres down the highway. From Cancun it is not an evening option.

Exception 1: the Red Casino at Grand Oasis

It was the first casino installed inside a Cancun hotel: it opened on a Saturday, 8 April, with blackjack, roulette, baccarat and Caribbean poker alongside machines and a sports book. The year is not firmly documented, though the hotel's own posts using the Red Casino tag date from mid-2017. The city sealed the premises in February 2018 over permit arrears, it operated again afterwards, and in December 2021 the travel press still called it a 24-hour casino.

Today you get three answers depending on who you ask, and we do not pick between them. The hotel's own booking site answers its FAQ with a flat yes: the resort has a 24-hour casino. Mexico's Interior Ministry list of authorised establishments, October 2025, contains the line "Red Casino Oasis Cancún". And the Google listing is marked permanently closed, with 3.8 and 334 reviews. For good measure, the chain's corporate site never uses the word casino, while its marketing domain sells the casino as the hotel's main distinction.

One more reading: a sweep of Google Maps for "casino" centred on kilometre 16 returned 21 places and not one filed under the category "casino" — not even the Red Casino, which is physically there. That is why the engine keeps handing you hotels.

Exception 2: Casino del Mar at the Royalton

This is the newest thing in the state and the part of this page that will age fastest. The chain opened Casino del Mar inside the Royalton Riviera Cancún complex in December 2025, publishing hours of 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and describing slot machines, seven-person roulette tables and European-style blackjack. It has no Google listing yet, so there is no rating and no review count to give you.

Two warnings. First, in the operator's own words, the room operates at an additional charge and is not included in the all-inclusive rate. Second, geography: despite the "Cancún" in the name, the property is in Puerto Morelos, halfway between the airport and Playa del Carmen. From Boulevard Kukulcán you cannot walk or take a city bus there.

One comparison explains the weight of it. The Hard Rock Hotel Cancún alone has 30 335 Google reviews; the seventeen gaming rooms on file across Quintana Roo add up to a little over nine thousand. One hotel makes three times the noise of the state's entire gaming industry, and the engine divides attention in that proportion.

Where the myth came from

What the page saysWhat is actually there
A major agency lists "luxury casino hotels in Cancun: Grand Oasis, Moon Palace and Hard Rock"One of the three. Moon Palace has an arcade with no betting; the Hard Rock has nothing
A US agency page says "Mexico changed the laws and now casino gambling in Cancun is legal"The federal law dates from 1947 and has never been rewritten. What changed in November 2023 was the regulation, the other way: no new machine permits

Add the tails and the resort myth comes to roughly 2 500 searches a month from the United States alone — about the same as the head query "casinos in Cancun", at 2 400. What is striking is not the number but that the pages receiving it do not answer the question. Google knows: five of the ten People Also Ask entries on the two head queries are literally "does hotel X have a casino".

What your resort does have instead

The difference between all of that and a casino is one word: wager. Where no money is staked no federal permit is needed, which is why a hotel can put a roulette table in the lobby with no paperwork. Where money is staked, a permit is required per establishment, and across Quintana Roo the federal count is 14 casinos: why no resort has one.

Your wristband does not work inside, and that is not the hotel being mean

Both hotels with a room say so in writing: the Royalton, that the casino "operates at an additional charge"; the Grand Oasis, with an asterisk by the casino line and "extra cost" at the page foot.

The reason sits in the federal gaming regulation: bets must be placed in national currency (article 10), the permit holder may not extend credit to a bettor (article 11), and a permit covers a single establishment (article 20). An all-inclusive package is, in practice, credit from the hotel, so gaming falls outside it — and since bets must be in pesos, a Mexican casino cannot take your dollars even where your hotel will.

What jumps out is that almost the whole boulevard depends on one room: in twenty-six kilometres of Hotel Zone there is a single casino open to anyone, and it is in a mall, not a lobby. Getting there without a car: from the Hotel Zone.

What this page does not publish

And one difference worth knowing before you change money: the machines in a physical room have no trial mode, so you cannot watch how a game pays before putting money in. That exists only online, on sites in the register kept by Mexico's gaming directorate: playing online from Cancun.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotels in Cancun have a casino?

Two. The Grand Oasis Cancún, kilometre 16.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, houses the Red Casino, and the sources contradict each other: the hotel and the October 2025 federal list say open, the Google listing says permanently closed. The Royalton Riviera Cancún, in Puerto Morelos, opened Casino del Mar in December 2025, billed separately. No other Cancun resort has a gaming room.

Does Hard Rock in Cancun have a casino?

No. The brand runs hotels with casinos in other countries, and when it does, the word Casino goes in the hotel name — as in Punta Cana. The Cancun property offers casino-themed nights with chips that have no cash value. The nearest real room is Casino Macao, about 2 km along the same boulevard.

Is there a casino at Moon Palace Cancún?

No. What it has is Wired, a games centre and arcade included in the rate, where nothing is wagered and nothing is cashed out. The Palace Bingo & Sport Bets casino on Avenida Tulum belongs to a different company that happens to share a word in its name.

Is there a casino at the Royalton Riviera Cancún?

Yes, since December 2025: Casino del Mar, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., with slot machines, seven-person roulette tables and European-style blackjack. Two caveats: it is charged separately from the all-inclusive rate, and the hotel is in Puerto Morelos, not Cancun.

How old do you have to be to enter a gaming room in Cancun?

Eighteen. The federal regulation bars minors from betting areas and the age of majority in Mexico is 18; the lists repeating "21" rely on a reform never passed. Bring photo ID, a passport if you are foreign.
