Planet Hollywood Cancun: shows yes, gaming tables no

The hotel is large and heavily reviewed — 4.6 out of 5 with 1,953 Google reviews — so the question gets asked a lot: two US search phrasings, 40 a month each, ask in so many words whether this hotel has a casino, and nothing in the results answers them.

Where the question comes from

From two places, neither of them Cancun. The first is the brand: an entertainment chain, with shows, music and memorabilia, and that word drags the expectation of gaming tables with it. The second is an imported habit: across much of the United States, resort and casino are the same word.

Costa Mujeres: a whole strip built without a single room

The hotel is not in the Hotel Zone or downtown but north of the city, on the strip marketed as Costa Mujeres or Playa Mujeres. Administratively it is the mainland part of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, and even the taxi tariff treats it separately, with its own zones on top of the city’s 53.

That is where the real explanation sits, and it is not about this hotel: the strip was built entirely during the years the federal government stopped granting new permits. The decree of 16 November 2023 barred authorising new rooms, and what exists in Quintana Roo today is what had already been licensed before it. No tower in Costa Mujeres made that cut.

• In Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres: zero rooms, on the street or inside a resort.
• On the island of Isla Mujeres: zero as well. The nine results a category filter returns are all venues in Cancun.
• The only two hotels in the state with a room inside are far from here: the Grand Oasis complex in the Hotel Zone, and the Royalton in Puerto Morelos.

What there is 28 kilometres away

From the hotel to the first real gaming room is about 28 kilometres by road, and the natural destination is the Avenida Tulum axis in downtown Cancun, where three rooms sit within three kilometres of each other: Jubilee, open around the clock with 4.2 and 3,592 reviews; Palace Bingo, with bingo and a sportsbook; and Casino By Yak at Plaza Las Américas.

About the ride, here is what nobody tells you in the lobby. Cancun taxis have no meter: they charge by zone, and this strip’s zones are not the city’s. Agree the fare before getting in and in pesos — the most repeated complaint is visitors being quoted in dollars. The drivers’ union announced meters for 2026, with no confirmation they are running. Uber and DiDi are legal since the 2023 reform, but in hotel areas and at the airport many drivers decline the pickup.

• Official photo ID. Entry to a gaming area starts at 18, not 21 — article 5, section I of the regulation. Foreign visitors are asked for a passport.
• Pesos. Article 10 requires wagering to be conducted in national currency, so change money before you leave the hotel.
• Taxes. Quintana Roo charges 10 % on what the player puts into play, not on winnings, and the federal government withholds 1 % of a prize.

And one difference you feel most from a hotel half an hour from everything: the machines in a physical room have no practice mode. To see how a game behaves you have to fund a house card, and to compare two you have to play both, with 28 kilometres of road in between. Online that free mode exists, and the operators licensed by the Dirección General de Juegos y Sorteos are public and checkable.
