Riu Cancun: why the chain has no casino in Mexico

No. There is no casino inside the Riu Cancun, and no property of the chain in Mexico has one, although the brand does run casinos elsewhere in the Caribbean. The hotel sits at kilometre 8.5 of Boulevard Kukulcan; the nearest gaming room is Casino Macao, about four and a half kilometres south, inside the La Isla mall at km 12.5. The reason is not about the brand at all — it is about how a Mexican gaming permit works.

Google knows the question and has no answer to give

In the “people also ask” box Google builds for both of the city’s main English searches, one line reads, word for word, Does the Riu in Cancun have a casino? The pages ranking at the top do not answer it: they return a catalogue of hotels tagged “casino hotel”.

Monthly US searches pairing a Cancun hotel with “casino”

Hard Rock Cancun no gaming room
310
Grand Oasis / Red Casino sources disagree on its status
290
Royalton / Casino del Mar real, opened December 2025
280
Dubai Palace a name on no facade anywhere
200
Moon Palace has an arcade, not a casino
80
Riu Cancun not one machine in the hotel
20

Added up, the “resort with a casino” myth is worth roughly 2,500 searches a month from the United States alone — about as much as the head search for the whole city.

Why the chain does not repeat here what it does elsewhere

Because in Mexico the permit belongs to the address, not to the brand. Three pieces of the legal frame explain it:

  1. A permit is granted per establishment. Article 20 of the gaming regulation, as amended on 16 November 2023, grants it “only in relation to one event or establishment” and adds that “under no circumstances may several establishments operate under the same permit”. A casino the chain runs abroad grants nothing here.
  2. Since that same reform, no new permits are issued for machine halls. The door a hotel would have to walk through has been shut since November 2023; what moves in this market is existing permits.
  3. The town hall has to agree. Article 22 requires a favourable opinion from the municipality where the room would stand: every opening is a local political decision.

Which is why “does chain X have casinos?” is the wrong question here. The useful answer is not in the logo; it is in the street address.

The nearest room: four and a half kilometres away

Casino Macao is the only gaming room along the twenty-six kilometres of Boulevard Kukulcan: second floor of La Isla II, inside the mall at km 12.5, 4.0 with 549 Google reviews, open noon to 4 a.m. and from 11 a.m. at weekends. From km 8.5 you never leave the boulevard.

Three things that get mistaken for a casino

The resort “casino night”Party tables with chips that carry no value and no cash payout. No wagering, so no permit needed.
The hotel arcade or game roomA video-game centre included in the package: machines, lights and tokens, but no bet and no cash prize.
Salsa casinoThe word also names a Cuban dance style and the classes sold under it. If that is what you were after, no page here will help.

The honest headline is not “no hotel in Cancun has a casino” but “two out of roughly two hundred do”. One is Red Casino at the Grand Oasis, km 16.5, which the hotel advertises as open 24 hours while its Google listing reads permanently closed. The other is Casino del Mar at the Royalton, open since December 2025, billed separately and in Puerto Morelos despite the “Cancun” in its name.

One difference that shows up only at the machine: a physical slot has no practice mode. You load money onto a house card at the cashier, and that is the only way to see how a game pays. Free play exists online, on sites licensed by the Dirección General de Juegos y Sorteos.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Riu Cancun have a casino?

No. Neither this property nor any other Riu in Mexico has a gaming room inside, although the brand does run casinos in other Caribbean countries. A Google Maps sweep for the word casino across the Hotel Zone returned no venue in that category on the boulevard.

Why does the chain have casinos abroad but not in Cancun?

Because a Mexican permit is granted per establishment, not per brand: article 20 of the federal regulation, amended on 16 November 2023, forbids running several establishments under one permit. Since that reform no new machine-hall permits are issued.

What is the closest casino to the Riu Cancun?

Casino Macao, on the second floor of the La Isla mall at km 12.5 — about four and a half kilometres south along the same boulevard. It opens at noon, closes at 4 a.m. and holds 4.0 with 549 Google reviews.

Does the hotel “casino night” count as a casino?

No. Those are party tables with valueless chips: no money is wagered, nothing is paid out in cash, and no permit is required. The same goes for the arcades and game rooms included in all-inclusive packages, which have machines but no betting.
