Grand Oasis Cancun and its casino: the sources do not agree

That is the whole knot: two pages run by the same company contradict each other, and the federal register still carried the name in October 2025. No press report announces a permanent closure, so nobody can give you a closing date — including us.

What Red Casino was, and what happened to it

It opened on Saturday, 8 April 2017, a date two independent sources agree on: a Mexican tourism-trade report on the opening, and a Canadian trade publication dated 10 April 2017 under the headline “Grand Oasis Opens Cancun’s First Resort Casino”.

The manager described the floor to the trade press at the time: two levels, open tables for blackjack, roulette, baccarat, three card poker and Caribbean poker, plus machines and a sports book with live betting. The hotel handed the space to a specialist operator rather than running it. How many machines or tables there are today, nobody publishes.

On 20 February 2018 municipal inspectors sealed the room for unpaid permits. That is a clausura — an administrative suspension lifted once the debt is paid — and it was lifted, because the room went back to work: in December 2021 a US travel publication still described it as open around the clock. After that, nothing.

Two hotels in the state, not two hundred

Cancun has on the order of two hundred large hotels, and Quintana Roo has fourteen licensed gaming rooms by the federal count. Of those fourteen, two sit inside a hotel: Red Casino here, and Casino del Mar at the Royalton, which opened in December 2025, sits in Puerto Morelos rather than Cancun and is billed separately.

This hotel spent years advertising itself as “the only casino in the Cancun Hotel Zone”. The claim was accurate, and it is where half the city’s mythology comes from: repeated often enough, “the only one” becomes “Cancun hotels have casinos”. The rest of that map is in why almost no Cancun resort has a casino.

Your wristband does not cover the gaming floor

On the hotel’s amenity list the casino line carries an asterisk, and the legend at the foot of that page reads “Extra cost”. The Royalton says the same in words: its casino “is not included in the all-inclusive rate”. Neither is a pricing whim.

• Article 10 of the federal gaming regulation requires betting to be conducted in national currency: pesos, settled apart from your room folio.
• Article 11 bars a licence holder from extending credit to a bettor, and a prepaid package is exactly that.
• The licence covers an establishment, not a hotel: the room is a separate business with its own cash desk.

Two things circulating online that we cannot confirm: whether non-guests are let in, and whether drinks are free for players. Secondary sources say access is allowed with photo ID; on drinks they contradict each other.

Careful with the name: five different things called Red

If Red Casino is dark: four kilometres to La Isla

From km 16.5 to km 12.5 is four kilometres of boulevard toward downtown, and city routes R-1 and R-2 run the whole strip. You pay cash as you board: the Hotel Zone fare is around 12 pesos, a rise to 15 was announced and then frozen, so carry coins. See how the R-1 works.

Casino Macao sits on the second floor of La Isla II: 4.0 with 549 Google reviews, open noon to 4 a.m. and from 11 a.m. at weekends. Plan the trip back first — the mall closes at 10 p.m. and the buses stop around 10:30 p.m., while the room runs until four. One difference between the floor and the screen, worth knowing before you cross the city: physical machines have no practice mode.
