A town with no room

Is there a casino in Tulum? No — and what the search results actually show you

There is no casino in Tulum — not in the town, not on the beach road, not near the ruins. Searching the word over the coordinates of the centre returns a single object and it is a hotel; asking for every business filed under the casino category within 30 km returns exactly one, and it stands in Akumal, 26 kilometres north, inside a resort complex. We also found no press record of a casino ever opening or closing in Tulum. Checked 10 September 2026.

The check ran three ways and all three agree. On the map, searching «casino» over the centre of Tulum returns one object, categorised as a hotel. In the category sweep with a 30 km radius the total is one: Casino Bahía in Akumal. And in the press we found no opening, no closure, no listing marked closed. Absence of records is not proof, so we word it that way: Tulum has no casino, and no public record that it ever had one.

What Google actually answers with

The shape of the results page tells the story: three hotel packs and no local pack. The search engine cannot find a business to show, so it fills the space with accommodation. Eight of the first ten results are travel agencies, hotel reviews or forums — not one is the page of an establishment.

The questions Google itself attaches to the search finish the picture: not one is about gambling. They ask which part of Tulum is most exclusive, where to go out at night, what a weekend at a beach club costs. It is a beach and nightlife destination with the word casino stuck on top.

The nearest room is in Akumal, inside a hotel

Casino Bahía occupies the Hacienda Doña Isabel at kilometre 250 of the Cancún–Tulum highway, inside the Grand Bahía Príncipe complex in Akumal — about 26 kilometres north of central Tulum in a straight line. It is the only casino on the Riviera Maya outside Playa del Carmen, and it is a hotel casino, not a room you walk into off the street.

We are not going to write that they let you in. Nobody has published it, and a sentence like that gets copied onto a hundred pages in a week.

The airport brought passengers, not casinos

The short answer to «now that there is an airport, will a casino open?» is that the airport has been running for two full years and nothing changed — and its own traffic is falling.

The comparison that matters: «Tulum airport» is searched 8,100 times a month in the United States, and «casinos in Tulum» forty. The airport moved tourists, not gamblers — and opening a room would take more than passengers. It would take a federal permit, and since November 2023 no new ones are issued.

Why there is none, and why that will not change soon

A gaming room in Mexico is not opened with a municipal licence. It needs a federal permit from the Gaming and Raffles directorate, granted for one establishment, non-transferable, running from one to fifteen years. That permit is the bottleneck, not the market.

The directorate's own count by state gives Quintana Roo 14, the same figure this site reaches counting listings one by one: six in Cancun, three in Playa del Carmen, three in Chetumal and two inside hotel complexes. None in Tulum. And since 16 November 2023 a federal decree has closed the issuing of new permits of this kind, so the list does not grow by itself: what exists today is, under current rules, what there is going to be.

Cozumel not a single room

Chetumal three open rooms

Tulum not a single room, and never was

One hundred and forty searches a month in Mexico for something that does not exist, plus about seventy more from the United States. And the most expensive click in the state: advertisers pay 9.52 dollars for «casino tulum», against 7.45 for Cozumel and under a dollar for most Cancun phrases. The annual curve is the sharpest in the state too — 50 searches in July against 260 in January, a fivefold swing: this is holiday-season demand from people already here, looking for something to do.

In Tulum the word usually means something else

A good share of what turns up under that word here is hotel theme nights — the familiar «casino night» with chips that are worth nothing — plus beach clubs and bars along the coast road. None of it is a gaming room: no cage, no cash prize, no federal permit behind it. On this coast the word also names a Cuban dance style, which is why salsa schools appear in casino results. The whole tangle is in what a Mexican casino is not.

What is left if you are in Tulum tonight

Three honest options. Drive the 26 kilometres to Akumal knowing access is not guaranteed if you are not a guest. Go up to Playa del Carmen, where three rooms are open to the public. Or stay where you are, with one thing worth knowing: the machines in any room are physical and have no trial version — you cannot see how a game behaves before loading money onto a house card — while a licensed operator's site opens in free mode and needs no hour on Highway 307. What that costs a visitor in practice is in playing online from Cancun.

Frequently asked questions

Are there casinos in Tulum?

No. Searching the word «casino» over central Tulum returns one object and it is a hotel; the business-category sweep within 30 km returns a single venue, Casino Bahía in Akumal. We found no press record of an opening or a closure either: there is no public record that Tulum ever had a gaming room.

Where is the nearest casino to Tulum?

Casino Bahía, at kilometre 250 of the Cancún–Tulum highway inside the Grand Bahía Príncipe complex in Akumal, about 26 km north. It opens 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and has 85 machines plus tables. If you are not staying there, phone first: the complex does not publish access rules for outside visitors.

Does Bahía Príncipe let you into the casino if you are not a guest?

We do not know, and neither does anyone claiming otherwise. We checked the complex's official site, its day-pass information and local guides, and no source states it. The only reliable way is to ask the front desk by phone before going.

Is it true that there are eleven casinos in Tulum?

No. That list comes from a cruise guide sitting in the fifth position of the search results, and not one of its eleven places appears as a casino on the map. It is the clearest example of why this page opens with a zero.

Does any Tulum hotel have a casino inside?

None, according to the records we checked. In all of Quintana Roo two hotels have a gaming floor — the Grand Oasis in Cancun, where sources contradict each other, and the Royalton in Puerto Morelos, charged separately from the all-inclusive rate — plus Casino Bahía in Akumal. The «casino nights» some hotels run use chips with no cash value.

Will a casino open in Tulum now that it has an airport?

The airport has been operating for two years and no room has appeared; its international traffic fell 34 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 and it went from twelve foreign destinations to four. Beyond the market there is a legal obstacle: since November 2023 a federal decree has closed the issuing of new permits of this kind.
