The check was not one casual search: the word «casino» over the coordinates of central Cozumel, then every business filed under that category within 20 km, then any business with «casino» in its name within 25 km. The category sweep returns four venues and all four are in Playa del Carmen.
What the Jackpot was, and what is known
The Jackpot belonged to Codere, the group with the most rooms in Quintana Roo, and stood in the Royal Village shopping centre, practically opposite the Puerta Maya cruise pier. Inside it was modest for the size of the port: a handful of machines, a sportsbook, a couple of blackjack tables, one roulette wheel and a poker table that barely got used. Its Google listing — 3.8 with 109 reviews — is claimed by the owner and marked permanently closed, which is what makes the label reliable: not an abandoned card drifting out of date, but the company saying there is nothing there.

Why Google still shows a casino that is not there
Search «casino cozumel» and the panel on the right shows «Casino Cozumel · 2.6 · 5 reviews». That is not the Jackpot card: it is a second listing at the same address, with no verified owner and no category, which kept a set of opening hours and even a busy-times chart. In listing databases it still reads as open.
So Google's own database contradicts itself: the operator's card says permanently closed, the ownerless duplicate says open. On an unclaimed listing the hours may simply have been inherited, which is why we do not count it as a live venue — and Google builds no local pack for this search, because there is nothing to put in it.
One more nuance: the name «Casino Cozumel» does appear in the federal list of authorised establishments dated October 2025. The permit is on the books; what does not exist, by every check available from outside, is a room open to the public. A permit and an open door are not the same thing.
The Hard Rock Casino Cozumel myth, explained
Google suggests «Hard Rock Casino Cozumel» as a related search in both languages, and there are YouTube videos with that title ending in question marks. It does not exist. Searching «hard rock cozumel» on the map returns two businesses and both are retail: a gift shop in the Royal Village Mall Center and a clothing store on Avenida Melgar. The mix-up is geographic — the shop stands in the same Royal Village where the casino stood, so a passenger sees the sign a few metres from a unit that used to be a gaming room and assembles a casino that never carried that name.

Cozumel is Mexico's largest cruise port. State port authority figures put 2025 at 1,300 ship calls and 4,732,250 passengers; between 1 January and 5 July 2026 there were 759 calls, up 8.7 per cent. On the other side the geography helps: from the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal to the Riviera Grand Casino is 940 metres in a straight line, twelve to fifteen minutes on foot through the Quinta Avenida area you were heading for anyway. It is the only room in the state within walking distance of a dock. Two caveats: it has no website of its own, and its listed hours — 3.9 with 901 reviews, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. — are worth confirming before you cross.
